A mound in the grounds of the castle is all that remains of an earlier 12th century motte. Although a succession of castles has stood on this site since 1057, the current red sandstone structure was built in 1836, and now houses the Sheriff Court. The graveyard is surrounded by a metal fence and has become overgrown, though some of its headstones are still visible.
